A big part of travelling the world is having an open mind when it comes to new cultures. In order to get the best experience possible, one should always make the effort to taste the local cuisine. This is often the most memorable and true reflection of the country and its people.

There are certain dishes which, to the Western world, may seem for a lack of a better world – gross. But these are delicacies to the local people and at least deserve a try. Some are even dangerous if prepared incorrectly, so don’t go around eating just anything! Be sure to take care and eat like the locals where the food is prepared by a proper chef. We’ve put together some of the strangest delicacies from around the world:

  1. Caviar of the East

As one of the rarest and most expensive commodities in the world, you may be shocked to realize that birds’ nests are the key ingredient to this famous unique dish. Swiftlets are the birds which create the rare ingredient. The nests are mostly made from the bird’s saliva which gives it a rubbery texture. The reason they are so expensive (a kilo of nests can cost between $2,000 and $10,000) is because they can only be harvested three times a year over very short periods.

The nests are made into a soup which has been a tradition for many centuries all over the East. The soup is even said to be an aphrodisiacand have high protein content.

  1. Fried Tarantulas

If you consider yourself an arachnophobe, then this next delicacy is probably one you’ll want to miss. In Skuon, Cambodia you can find these delicious arachnids for sale on most street corners. People come from all over the world just to eat these spiders. They are prepared whole, placed in batter and fried straight from their burrows. Crispy on the outside and gooey in the center, apparently, these hairy creatures taste just like chicken!

  1. The Deadly Fugu

When prepared incorrectly this Japanese dish could be the last meal you eat. Chefs who prepare puffer fish have to be certified to do. Traditonal Japanese chefs,dressed in quality chef wear, will be ready cook you a fish dish unlike any other you’ve had before. This seriously is the most extreme delicacy out there – if it’s not death then the poisonous tetrodotoxins will cause paralysis. So, if you’re willing to risk it, this is one dish you can’t miss out on.
